Non-Invasive Prenatal Blood Test (NIPT)

Available at our pregnancy scanning and testing clinic on the Isle of Man.

From 10 weeks.

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), sometimes called non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS), is a blood test that looks at the baby’s DNA which is circulating in the mothers bloodstream, to determine whether the baby may have certain chromosomal abnormalities. The NIPT test analyses the baby’s DNA and can indicate the presence of chromosomal conditions including Down's Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18) and Patau’s Syndrome (Trisomy 13).

The Vision NIPT test offered by ScanSanctuary also tests the baby’s sex chromosomes for abnormalities, and subsequently determine the foetal sex if required. For twin pregnancies, we can determine whether there is Y-chromosomal material detected, which would indicate that at least one baby is a boy.

Pre-Scan Before Test

We offer a pregnancy scan prior to the blood test, which will determine viability, gestational age and number of foetuses. Very occasionally it may involve an internal scan (click here for more information about internal scans).

Ample time for your appointment - 35 minutes.
The pregnancy scan itself takes approx. 15 ~ 20 minutes, so our generous 35 minute pregnancy scan appointments allow you more time to ask questions and discuss findings with your Midwife Sonographer.

Exclusivity
We offer private appointments. This means that during the time of your appointment you will have exclusive access to the clinic. You and your partner / guests can enjoy this special moment in a private, relaxed, supportive environment.

Your Midwife Sonographer
The Midwife Sonographer at our Isle of Man clinic, Jenifer Reid, will carry out your scan appointment, ensuring a calm, supportive experience with an expert. Jen has been working in the field since 2006 and delights in each and every scan experience.

Increased Accuracy
Our state-of-the-art technology (GE Voluson Swift) is one of the most popular ultrasound machines for obstetric scanning. It features class leading 4D imaging as well as proprietary GE efficiency technologies. 3D/4D imaging modes, CrossXBeam and Speckle Reduction imaging assist with excellent accuracy.

The NIPT Blood Test

The Vision NIPT test offers a highly accurate and earlier indication of whether these chromosomal aneuploidies are likely to be present in the baby, and therefore later diagnosed.

The Vision test offered by ScanSanctuary has >99% sensitivity and specificity for trisomy 21/18/13 at its basic level, however as a result, false positive results and false negative results are still possible and therefore Vision should not be considered a diagnosis.

Vision can be performed as early as 10 weeks into pregnancy, using just a single tube of blood. The level of fetal DNA (fetal fraction) in NIPT samples will vary from person to person, but generally increases the further you are into pregnancy. Vision is able to produce a result from as low as <2% fetal fraction, however there is still a chance that the fetal fraction will be too low in your sample to successfully produce a result. If this were to happen, you will be offered a free of charge redraw.

Vision NIPT does not give a yes/no answer. If the result is reported as ‘no aneuploidy detected’, then it is unlikely that the baby has the condition.  If results come back as ‘aneuploidy detected’, it is likely the baby has the condition, however as false positives and false negatives can occur, we would always recommend invasive testing to confirm the result and provide diagnosis. If required, genetic counselling is also available to any patients who receive an ‘aneuploidy detected’ result for any of the conditions screened for. Please contact us to arrange this.

Additional screening options are available for singleton pregnancies, and can be discussed with you at your appointment.

Results are available within 7-10 working days from sample receipt at the testing laboratory.
