The ScanSanctuary Difference
Ample time for your appointment - 35 minutes.
The pregnancy scan itself takes approx. 15 ~ 20 minutes, so our generous 35 minute pregnancy scan appointments allow you more time to ask questions and discuss findings with your Midwife Sonographer.
Exclusivity
We offer private appointments. This means that during the time of your appointment you will have exclusive access to the clinic. You and your partner / guests can enjoy this special moment in a private, relaxed, supportive environment.
Your Midwife Sonographer
Your expert Midwife Sonographer will carry out your scan appointment, ensuring a calm, supportive experience, unlike in a busy hospital.
Increased Accuracy
Our state-of-the-art GE Voluson Swift is one of the most popular ultrasound machines for obstetric scanning. It features class leading 4D imaging as well as proprietary GE efficiency technologies. 3D/4D imaging modes, CrossXBeam and Speckle Reduction imaging assist with excellent accuracy.
Allowing for Mother Nature during Pregnancy Scans
If baby is being tricky and it is impossible to get the information we are looking for on the day of your scan, we are happy to offer a rescan at a later date, for a small fee of £15.
The Scan Procedure
You will lie down on the bed prepared and we will reveal your stomach.
A lubricating gel is put on your skin to allow the probe to move smoothly. This also ensures there's continuous contact between the probe and the skin. A small handheld probe is placed on your skin and moved over your stomach. You shouldn't feel anything other than the sensor and gel on your skin.
As we move across your stomach we will start to see the image on the screen and your Midwife Sonographer will explain what we are looking at.
Ultrasound Scans
An ultrasound scan is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of the body. A small device called an ultrasound probe is used, which gives off high-frequency sound waves. You can't hear these sound waves, but when they bounce off different parts of the body, they create "echoes" that are picked up by the probe and turned into a moving image. This image is displayed on a monitor while the scan is carried out.
Please note that ScanSanctuary provides a ‘non diagnostic’ service. As such; if we notice any problems with your pregnancy we have a procedure in place to refer you directly to Noble’s Hospital, Isle of Man. We do not specifically look for fetal abnormalities and will not be held responsible should an anomaly be missed.
Gender Reveal
If you don’t want to know the gender of your baby, please tell your Midwife Sonographer before they start the scan. If you are planning a ‘gender reveal’, the gender can be placed in a sealed envelope, which you can share with others without knowing yourself - maybe for a gender reveal cake or other lovely party surprise!
If you would like to find out your baby’s gender in the room then your Midwife Sonographer will point to the baby’s anatomy and explain what we are looking at!

Your Midwife Sonographer at Melrose,
Ann Smith PgCert, RM, Midwife Sonographer
“Hello, I’m Ann, a Midwife Sonographer from Jedburgh.
Throughout my career I have worked in all aspects of Midwifery care: Early Pregnancy, Antenatal, Labour Ward, Postnatal and Special Care Baby Unit, and in recent years my focus has been on early pregnancy and Obstetric Ultrasound.
In 2018 I was presented with the NHS Borders, Patient Centred Care Award. I had been nominated by a couple who I had looked after who noticed my enthusiasm in providing a thorough and personalised approach to care. I thrive on really looking after each client’s needs in a friendly, warm and professional manner.
I have worked in many different NHS locations including the Scottish Borders, Fife, Western Isles, Isle of Man and Lincolnshire, which has broadened my horizons and depth of knowledge.
I feel really privileged to be able to support women and families through what can be their most important, and yet vulnerable journey.
As part of your pregnancy journey you can be reassured that your and your baby’s well being are my top priority.”
